The second stop on our adventure was Segovia. There’s something I really liked about this little medieval town. I tend to be partial to smaller towns anyway and this one definitely had that small town feel. I kept expecting people to jump out and start singing like in Beauty and the Beast.
One of the big features of this town is the Roman Aqueduct. It’s huge! They say it was built in the first or second century and it’s about 2700 feet long. There were birds that were flying all over over the place.
One of the things I loved the most about Segovia was the evening “paseo”. At about 6pm every night, people would congregate in the town square, grab a drink or some ice cream and visit with friends. In the middle of one of the town squares was this carousel. It was the coolest one I’ve ever seen.
I especially loved all the old people that showed up dressed in their Sunday best to shoot the breeze and share the latest gossip with each other.
This was one of the bigger churches. So many birds around!
We wandered up the narrow streets to the Plaza Nueva and saw the Segovia Cathedral at sunset.
It became our nightly ritual to sit on a bench in the Plaza Nueva and people watch. It was so peaceful.
The culinary specialty of Segovia is roast suckling pig. That’s right…. baby pig. All over town we saw restaurants boasting they had the best suckling pig in town. So of course we had to try it. It was OK. I’m not a huge meat eater. But as we were walking back to our hotel that night, we ran across this guy with a tiny pet pig! I just kept giggling because he was so cute! But then I thought, “I’m sorry! I just ate your cousin!” 🙁
In the morning, we went back to the Plaza Nueva, got breakfast from one of the local bakeries and sat on our bench from the night before. I loved how they packaged it up!
Inside the Cathedral
As we explored the narrow streets, I noticed that a lot of the building exteriors had different patterns. Really cool.
Then we went to the Alcazar, the big castle that looked a lot like something out of a Disney movie.
